Your Medicare Coverage Choices, Explained

When you first sign up for Medicare, you’ll have two main paths to choose from. Understanding these options is key to finding the plan that works best for your health needs and your financial plan.

Option 1:

Original Medicare
(Parts A & B)

This includes Parts A and B.

Part A

Covers hospital stays, skilled nursing care, hospice, and some home health care.

Part B

Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and some medical equipment.

With Original Medicare
I recommend adding:

A Medigap (Supplement) Plan to help pay deductibles, copays, and coinsurance.

A Part D Prescription Drug Plan to cover medications.

Option 2:

Medicare Advantage
(Part C)

Combines Part A, Part B, and usually Part D prescription coverage in one plan.

Offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare.

Often includes extra benefits like dental, vision, hearing, and fitness programs.

You’ll typically use a provider network (like an HMO or PPO).

Which Path is Right for You?

Original Medicare + Supplement: Often better for those who want flexibility to see any doctor nationwide who accepts Medicare, and want to limit out-of-pocket costs.

Medicare Advantage: Often more budget-friendly upfront, with added benefits, but care is usually limited to a provider network.
